Afitos is a beautiful settlement on the peninsula of Kassandra, Halkidiki. Built on a rock that dominates like a castle above the sea, it gives the feeling of an Aegean island. Her name was preserved for thousands of years either as Aphytos, derived from her ancient name Afytis, or as a paraphrase of it as Athytos. The root of the name comes either from the name of an actual person of Aphyteos, or from Afytis where “A” is not negative but indicative of an abundance of plants.

It is a place endowed by nature with infinite natural beauty. The visitor can enjoy the wonderful blue-green sea with perhaps the clearest and warmest waters of the Mediterranean, the small sandy beaches interrupted by marine rocks (shellstones) of great historical and environmental importance, because here we find the ancient millstone quarries as well as important biotopes where most species of fish that live in our seas give birth, as well as the primeval natural environment of Halkidiki, where the native Halkidiki pine grows its roots in the clear waters of the Toroneos gulf.

But the most important sight that causes wonder and awe to the visitor is the traditional settlement of Afitos with a history that is lost in the depths of its 28 centuries of life. The residents of the community, rejecting the anarchic tourist development that has altered our place in recent years and wanting to keep their cultural heritage uncontaminated, tried to develop the place through its culture. That is, highlighting the natural beauty, the traditional settlement and its ancient history.

So the old houses built from the local porolith were restored, the streets were paved and the place now imposes beauty, dignity and respect on the visitors as well as on the locals.
