Afitos Halkidiki – The fantastic turquoise colors of Toroneos Gulf (drone video)
Athytos, or Afitos, built on a rock with steep slopes, is one of the most attractive and traditional places in Halkidiki.
Athytos is one of the most picturesque villages of Halkidiki, it is a wonderful natural balcony in the Toroneo Gulf that looks like an island settlement with cobbled streets and stone mansions. The tranquility and the beautiful beach, awarded every year with the Blue Flag, make Athyto very popular in the summer.
The village has a long history as there are signs of settlements from 3000 BC. Aphytos which was known as Aphytis experienced great growth as a member of the Athenian Alliance. In 348 BC it was completely destroyed by King Philip II and later re-inhabited. During the period of the Roman Empire it experienced a second major development probably due to the monument of Ammon Zeus. But what impresses the visitor is the natural location of the village and its architecture!. The old houses built from the local porolith were restored, the streets were paved and the place now commands visitors and locals alike, beauty, dignity and respect.
The settlement is traditional, with stone houses and cobblestones.
Its distance from Nea Fokaia is 2 kilometers. Among others there is a kindergarten and a primary school. The central church is that of Agios Dimitrios, in the village square, which was built in 1857. From the square one can see the gulf of Kassandra.
